About Soper Hall
The Soper Hall has stood, in the centre of Caterham, for more than 100 years, and in that time has served the residents as both an administrative centre for local government and a venue for wedding receptions, parties, meetings, exhibitions and events – a complete community facility.
The Soper Hall was built, in 1911, as Council Offices for Caterham Urban District Council. It was named after William Garland Soper (1837-1908), the first chairman of Caterham Urban District Council, who has been described as “The Father of Modern Caterham”. The building’s Memorial Hall is dedicated to him.
The building was first occupied in February 1912 and served as the offices for Caterham and Warlingham UDC until 1974 when the offices for the newly-formed Tandridge District Council were established at Oxted.
The halls are now run by a registered charity to act as a venue and meeting facility available to the local community.
